!Saludos! Greetings Parents/Guardians!
I hope that you all had a great summer! My name is Mrs. Rodriguez and I’m the Spanish teacher at Shoesmith elementary. I am very excited to begin working with your child and expose him/her to the Spanish language. It is my goal to motivate your child to begin learning Spanish and appreciate cultures where Spanish is spoken so that he/she can be on his/her way of becoming a world citizen.
My enthusiasm for languages began when at the age of ten my family and I immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico and I began learning English. I learned the new language yet continued to have a passion for my native tongue and its culture. Once in college, I realized that Spanish Literature, Latin American history and urban education were truly my passions. Therefore, when I graduated the University of Illinois-Chicago, I decided to work in a Latino non-profit organization where I taught Spanish for six years. During this time I also went on to graduate school and obtained my Master’s degree in teaching Spanish kindergarten to 12th grade from Chicago State University.
As a mother of two, I know that by teaching them both Spanish and English I am opening a world of opportunities for them. I hope that you see the value in speaking more than one language so that we can work together to encourage your child to learn Spanish. Learning a new language will be one of the first steps your child will take in order to better participate in an ever changing global society. I look forward to working with your child and hopefully meeting you in a near future.
Please read the following policies by Friday September 11th, 2009.
